There are a lot of things that can be said about chemistry. I’m a firm believer that you have to have it in order for there to be any shot between a couple. There has to be some element of physical attraction, and I think that’s the truth for everyone. As much as we like to believe that personality has it over looks, there is a base line.
After that though, it’s off to the races. If you’ve read any of my writing you know I enjoy my arts, but I’m a scientist by training. I think that there’s some misconception about science, that the more you study it the less wonder you have in the world. I find that may be true when you first start, the more you understand about the world, the more aware you are of how much you don’t know.
I think that’s where the journey begins, when you understand your own ignorance. When you study science, so much of your early years is spent replicating basic work. It’s an exercise in tedium, but you realize that the work that you’re doing is the basis of our understanding of the world, the work that was done by pioneers in their fields, things that we take for granted. They teach you that so you comprehend that you stand on the shoulders of giants. Once you learn those tools, then things really open up, and like any other discipline, it takes a lifetime to master.
I don’t expect every woman I converse with to have an in-depth knowledge of science, but I feel like scientific literacy should be something that should be expected. People that believe in the healing power of crystals or nonsense of that sort get the biggest of eye rolls. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that there are things that we don’t yet understand, but that doesn’t mean that we chalk them up as inexplicable. We search, we explore, we yearn for more understanding, and hopefully along the way we gain the wisdom with which to use that knowledge. The worst is people who know just a little bit, and use that insignificant amount of learning to extrapolate bullshit. My favorite one of these was a woman who told me that she believes that the Earth is a closed system so our lifeforces are bound to circulate and be reused. I cannot tell you how quickly I paid the check and made up an excuse to get out of there.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Better to have none and know that than to have a little and believe you know the whole of it.
