Women We’ll Never Date: Janelle Monae
For a second, let’s just ignore how breathtakingly gorgeous she is. Janelle Monae is just so damn cool. There is something incredibly sexy about a woman who is completely comfortable in her skin and who she is. Ms. Monae’s style, her music, her everything, is so uniquely hers. A lot of times you see the contrived ways that an artist will try to set themselves apart (re: Miley) but when you see someone’s music and style as a true reflection of who they are, it is absolutely striking.
There’s also something incredibly attractive about undeniable talent, and for me, when you see her perform, you see her videos, she just oozes talent. She’s in a category all her own, and while slightly out of the mainstream, is extremely marketable, as noted by her relationship with CoverGirl. But getting back to the original point, why we’ll never date her? She’s just too fucking cool. That’s what I think of when I see her perform, everything about her is just cool. That’s her, and everything she does, she owns.
And then there’s her beauty. She’s gorgeous, and the reason she can pull of that ridiculous hairstyle is because her features are so overtly feminine. Her look is so unique, but again, she owns it. She’s truly invested in her music too, as she’s not putting out singles, but putting together themed and suited albums to achieve an artistic vision. I’m not going to lie, I’ve always wanted to date a musician and get to see the behind-the-scenes happenings that make them tick and inspire their music. Seeing Ms. Monae’s creative process would be nothing short of incredible.
At last, we get to her music. On Wikipedia, they list her genre as ‘Psychedelic Soul’. I think that’s as close an approximation as we’re going to get. When you listen to one of her albums it’s not just a collection of songs, but an experience as a whole. When you break it down by track, I think she spans the whole emotional gamut. I streamed ‘The Electric Lady’, her new album coming out next week, and it was an absolute blast to listen to.
Plus, she can pull off a tux better than most guys.
And that’s why we’ll never date Janelle Monae.
